Austin Irby was a Navy SEAL described by his peers as a man among men, a legend among legends, and above all, a dear friend among friends. The AI brand represents an evolving line of performance wear products inspired by the SEAL teams and created to honor the memory of their “brother” Austin. The sale of every AI-branded product generates a contribution to the Navy SEAL Foundation.
Austin Rivers Irby
To say Austin had a lifelong ambition to be a SEAL is evidenced by one of his second-grade papers - a single sheet written in crayon, which said exactly that. So, it was no surprise that he enlisted in the United States Navy immediately after graduation from the University of Florida. Austin completed Basic Underwater Demolitions/SEALs and SEAL Qualification Training with class 285. He served on some of the nation’s most sensitive initiatives while attached to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team ONE and SEAL Team TWO. A motorcycle accident ended his life just months before taking on a dream position as Training Chief at Naval Special Warfare Advanced Training Command Detachment Kodiak in Alaska.
Like many who served with him, Austin earned a reputation for excellence. For his dedication and service, he was a combat veteran awarded the Bronze Star, Navy Commendation Medal (x2), Navy Achievement Medal (x3), and various personal and unit awards. What all SEALs have in common is the will to persevere and the desire for the highest form of camaraderie. What may have further distinguished Austin was the sense of fair and equitable accountability he demonstrated and expected from the people around him, his doubled-edged humor, and his likability. In part, his teammates dubbed him “Big Irb” due to his imposing size. Rank, rate, or status aside, Austin gave and expected respect. Never too busy to help a teammate or show generosity to a random stranger. Perhaps “Big Irb” also referred to the conviction and commitment to his teammates in his big heart.
3 Distinctive FEATURES
Austin marked his personal gear with a simple symbol from his interlocked initials. This very “AI” in his handwriting is incorporated into the design of every AI-branded product.
Austin kept a journal and was a voracious reader. Found interspersed throughout his journal were single pages dedicated to a quote, apparently sourced most often from whatever he was reading at the time. Some were attributed, and some were not. Each AI-branded item includes one of these quotes from his journal.
Three U.S. states held special significance to Austin—Florida, Hawaii, and Alaska. Unique camouflage patterns are derived from the contour of each state and featured in AI brand designs.
